Lunch!

Posted on | Tuesday, May 17, 2011 | No Comments

Yesterday I had a lunch date with the lovely Hannah and her sweet baby girl, Rubey. Last time I saw them both it was only for a short visit at the apartment. Considering that I have not properly seen her in almost three months (I still cannot believe it's been that long, yeesh!) this needed to be rectified. Immediately. Besides, Hannah had a Chili's gift card that was itching to be used. And who doesn't love to eat at Chili's?

Having seen Rubey grow for nine months inside of Hannah's tummy it's amazing to see her as a living breathing little girl. I can't think of a single person who could resist seeing this adorable face. Rubey is such a little princess. It's amazing to think how small babies are and how fascinated they can be, even with the tiniest things. Earlier this week Rubey discovered her hands, now she is enthralled by them.

See? Completely entralled by those tiny little fists. Hannah is such a good mommy. She's truly a natural at motherhood, it made me smile to watch her coo and cuddle her sweet baby. Watching her with Rubey made me miss having a little one of my own, it's been years since Kael was that tiny.

I'm really hoping I can see Hannah and Rubey again before I move, we haven't seen each other nearly enough in the past few months and I miss her like crazy. After being around someone almost daily for a year and a half it's weird not seeing them. I know I have said it before, but Hannah is almost like a mellowed-out version of me. Maybe that's why we are so close, we're polar opposites but at the same time ridiculously similar.

I love these girls so much. They're the best.

You say goodbye, I say hello

We don't always realize how many people care about us until it's we say goodbye to them. I have lived in Oklahoma for over four years and in that time I've made wonderful friends and rekindled relationships with some people that I was lucky enough to know since I was a small child. I don't see many of these people often (as is often the case, sadly) but that doesn't make them any less important.

Even though this move is the best thing for me (in both literal and metaphorical sense) there is still a saddness to all the well wishes and goodbyes. It could easily be years before I see some of these people again. I know that I will see a few of them again at my wedding, but after that who knows.

The hardest person to say goodbye to is Katy. She's my sister and my best friend, and neither of us seem ready to accept that very soon we will be states apart. It's hard to think that we will be limited to facebook chats, Skype, and phone calls. While it's better than nothing it certainly is not the same.

Mom and I have made plans for a weekly Skype date (moreso for Kael's benefit than ours). Perhaps Katy and I can plan a monthly date night (cook the same meal and watch a movie together, maybe) too.

As sad as the goodbyes were it was wonderful to see so many people together at once again. I'm so glad that such a large number was able to make it. Thank you to everyone who came and gave me hugs and wishes of good luck.

Baby fever

Hannah and her hubby Chris came by today to pick up my bed. And they brought their darling princess Rubey with them! I haven't seen Hannah since her baby shower two months ago and it was so good to see her now. I didn't realize how much I missed her until she knocked on my front door. Work is not the same without her. She was the constantly calming force to my ever-present hyperactivity.

It's amazing seeing a newborn. You forget how tiny babies truly are. Rubey is two months old and yet I feel like she must have been born last week. She feels so fragile and delicate. I can't fathom that my tall strapping young boy was once so small, but I know he must have been.

Intense Wind + Men in Kilts + Women in Corsets = An interesting Afternoon

Yesterday Kael and I went to the Medieval Fair along with our neighbor Danielle and her daughter Elizabeth. The Fair is an annual event marked by jesters, corsets, and an excess of expensive leather clothing. I absolutely love it. So does Kael.

This is our third year attending and I still get excited about it. Even though my budget can't possibly afford the $400 leather boots or boned corsets it's still so much fun to just look at everything -- people included.

The only downside is that it seems regardless of the year some inclement weather will strike during the fair. Last year it was a horrible Artic cold front that hit midday and brought the temperature from a balmy 75* to a freezing 38* in less than three hours. This year it was wind. 45 mph wind that blew dust and sand in our faces until we were nearly blinded.

This is Oklahoma though, weather doesn't faze us. Especially not wind.

See? Wind. And totally not fazed.

Baby, baby, baby, oooh!

One of the particularly awesome things about coming back to Alabama is being able to see old friends again. Most of my friends from four (or more) years ago have moved on to bigger, better, and far different things -- as to be expected -- but there are a handful of people that I am thankful to say are still considered best friends. You know, the people that you can not see then for five years and within a matter of seconds of seeing each other it's like those years never happened.

Chelsea is one of those amazing friends. I haven't seen her since 2007 but within a matter of minutes we were catching up like nothing had happened. Both of our lives have changed in the best possible way; we're both Mommys to wonderful children (her daughter Layla is so freaking cute!), we've found awesome guys to spend our lives with, and we have both outgrown being die-hard goths.

Just don't tell our parents that last part.

Layla didn't entirely know what to make of me or Alex. We were cooing over her and within a matter of moments her face crumpled in the most adorable way ever. We weren't Mommy and therefore we had no reason to be cuddling her or telling her how pretty she was.

Although Alex did magically coerce Layla into playing with him after about half an hour. It was simple really, he took apart her play floor and played with a hair brush. Suddenly he was the best thing ever.

Note the piece of floor in her adorable baby hands. It was apparently the best chew toy ever.

I was sad to leave for the night, even though I am planning to come back and see her again before I fly back to Oklahoma. Although I realized the moment Alex and I got home that I had left my purse at her house. It was just an excuse to give her another hug, but don't tell anyone I told you that.

Last night was quite honestly one of the best nights ever. Nevermind the crazy rain storm and the nail polish fiasco (possibly more on that later), it easily breached the Top 5 List of "Most Enjoyable Nights With Super-Awesome People". I'd never been to P.F. Chang's China Bistro, which Mallory and Alex did not realize when the reservations were made. I have to say, I am very appreciative of their choice in cuisine.

Friends in low places

Well, kind of. Minus the bar, the wedding, and the song.

This week has been incredibly painful. I don't feel comfortable discussing it on a public forum, but suffice to say it has been truly heartbreaking. There isn't any real end in sight to what is happening and it is taking a toll on all involved. I made mention of what was happening on my facebook and asked people to pray for those involved. Upon returning home I saw that Katy had posted on my wall --

I know that youre having a tough day, so I made all those cupcakes we looked at yesterday, I'll be over later.

I truly love that woman.

She came over and held me while I cried. And then we ate cupcakes. Red Velvet, Lemon, and Vanilla Almond. I smiled and then cried a bit more, and had another cupcake. It's something special when your friend sees you are in pain and spends her morning making wedding cupcake replicas from scratch (Katy doesn't believe in box mixes). It's even more special when they hold you and let you feel everything you have bottled up inside without saying a word. It was truly the best thing should could have done.

I still have about seven cupcakes in my fridge right now. I'm planning on eating several of them for dinner tonight, my diet be dammed.

I don't know what is going to happen or what to expect in the coming weeks (or months), but knowing I have people that love me this much reminds me it will be okay. Regardless of what happens it will be okay.

And we will always have cupcakes.

Baby shower!

Today was Hannah's baby shower. I think she may have accidentally given me baby fever. Or at least a sudden urge to be pregnant again. Minus the swollen feet and inability to shave my legs for almost two months. If I can bypass that I would be really happy.

It was really a great party. Hannah will be 38 weeks in just a handful of days, so for all I know the next time I see her there might be a baby Rubey in her arms. It's so exciting -- I had the fantastic experience of being able to watch her go through this entire pregnancy. For some reason it never dawned on me while I was pregnancy with Kael how astonishing it is that a person can build a human being within them. It's truly amazing.

And of course it gave me another wonderful opportunity to take a million pictures. Or at least four hundred. Practice makes perfect, right?

About

Photobucket I was born and raised in California. I have also lived in Hungary, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, and I will be moving again this summer. Kael is my incredibly awesome kiddo who is growing up far too quickly, and Alex is my fiance who makes me happier than should be legally allowed. I write about them a lot. I'm mildly obsessed with cooking and photography. I write about those things, too.
