I know most of the people who read this already are already aware -- but Tuscaloosa, AL and the surrounding area was hit by a devastating tornado this evening. Fatalities are being reported and there are areas that, from the pictures, looks to be completely destroyed. The video below gives a good idea of how severe the tornado was:

I'm waiting to hear back from friends and praying that no one else is hurt by these storms. Please pray and keep them all in your thoughts.

Friends in low places

Well, kind of. Minus the bar, the wedding, and the song.


This week has been incredibly painful. I don't feel comfortable discussing it on a public forum, but suffice to say it has been truly heartbreaking. There isn't any real end in sight to what is happening and it is taking a toll on all involved. I made mention of what was happening on my facebook and asked people to pray for those involved. Upon returning home I saw that Katy had posted on my wall --

I know that youre having a tough day, so I made all those cupcakes we looked at yesterday, I'll be over later.

I truly love that woman.

She came over and held me while I cried. And then we ate cupcakes. Red Velvet, Lemon, and Vanilla Almond. I smiled and then cried a bit more, and had another cupcake. It's something special when your friend sees you are in pain and spends her morning making wedding cupcake replicas from scratch (Katy doesn't believe in box mixes). It's even more special when they hold you and let you feel everything you have bottled up inside without saying a word. It was truly the best thing should could have done.


I still have about seven cupcakes in my fridge right now. I'm planning on eating several of them for dinner tonight, my diet be dammed.

I don't know what is going to happen or what to expect in the coming weeks (or months), but knowing I have people that love me this much reminds me it will be okay. Regardless of what happens it will be okay.

And we will always have cupcakes.

Busy busy

As the title implies this week has been busy. Very good, but busy.

Oklahoma missed out on a majority of the snowpocalypse that landscaped much of the Midwest and South last week. Or, at least it missed central Oklahoma. We got a light dusting that lasted for about a day and then was gone. I don't think I have ever seen such a mild winter in this state. Not complaining, mind you, but it is different than what we are accustomed to. Every year I have been here has had some kind of a weather disaster during the winter. Ice storms that knock out power for weeks on end, blizzards that leave hundreds of cars (and their drivers) stranded on the interstate Christmas Day, hail that demolishes cars and damages buildings... It's always left me with a looming apprehension of winter.


Sure is pretty though.





Kael and I also went to the Central Oklahoma Asthma and Allergic clinic on Wednesday to try and better understand what happened in December and how we can avoid it happening again.

Getting back to normal

The past four days have been terrifying here at Team Herbitter.

Saturday morning the cough that Kael has been fighting off took a turn for the bad. He was having a difficult time breathing and his overall complexion was looking bad. By that afternoon I knew something was very, very wrong. His breathing was shallow and labored and he was becoming hypoxic. In laymen's terms; he couldn't breathe and was increasingly getting worse.

I took him to urgent care and discovered his oxygen saturation level was 87% and dropping with a heart rate of 165. They sent us to the nearest ER and within an hour he had received his first steroid treatment, a breathing treatment and was being prepped for a chest x-ray. The good news was Kael's test results came back negative for RSV, H1N1, and the other common culprits -- but that still didn't explain why he couldn't breathe. The decision was made to keep him overnight for observation. They put an IV in his arm (which he took far better than Mommy did) and prepared him for transport.


Once Kael was better stabilized they transferred him via ambulance to the pediatric unit in a hospital about 10 miles away. I can honestly say I didn't expect his first ambulance ride (or mine) to be before his fifth birthday.
